Take the Quiz

Dad’s short answer: No, and it doesn't need to be. A truck-mounted professional system has far more heat, pressure and extraction than any home machine. But a home machine used four times a year keeps carpet from ever getting to the state where you'd need a pro.

What a professional actually has

Truck-mounted systems run much hotter water, much higher pressure, and dramatically stronger vacuum than anything you can plug into a wall outlet. That combination gets deeper and leaves carpet drier.

They also bring specific chemistry for specific problems, and experience with fiber types that'll tell them when not to wet-clean something at all.

For a restoration job — carpet that hasn't been cleaned in years, serious pet contamination, or anything that's gone into the pad — that's the right call, and no home machine substitutes for it.

Where the home machine wins

Frequency and timing. You can clean the traffic lane the week it starts to look tired, not in three weeks when the appointment comes up. Carpet maintained that way rarely needs a restoration in the first place.

Accidents. Nobody calls a professional for one pet mess, and the ten-minute response is what actually saves the carpet.

The sensible pattern for a house with carpet and pets: own a machine for maintenance and accidents, and bring in a professional every few years for a full restoration. Those two things cost less together than either extreme.

And if your carpet is at the point where you're wondering whether a machine will fix it — it probably won't. Have it done properly once, then maintain it yourself.

Dad’s Take: Own a machine for upkeep, hire a pro for rescue. Keep carpet maintained and you'll almost never need the rescue.
