☑The Carpet Cleaners Testing System

How every carpet cleaner earns the Dad Approved sticker.

I’m not running a lab. I’m a dad who bought carpet cleaners with my own money — full-size uprights and portable spot cleaners — made the same set-in stains I make for every machine, and lived with them in my real home with pets, kids, and a dog that has accidents. This is the exact system I run every carpet cleaner through — and what that sticker actually means when you see it.

★ Both Types, Same Standard

One system. Every carpet cleaner I test.

Whether you need a full-size deep cleaner for whole rooms or a grab-and-go spot machine for accidents, it goes through the same honest, common-sense gauntlet — bought with my own money, lived with in a real home, and scored the same way.

ⓘ The One Thing Nobody Else Measures

The Hassle-Free Factor.

I’ve bought carpet cleaners that lifted a test stain beautifully in a demo — and were miserable to actually live with. A pain to fill, a pain to empty, and a pain to clean out after every single use.

Dads are busy. A carpet cleaner that needs twenty minutes of setup and cleanup for a five-minute job doesn’t get used — it sits in the closet. If it’s a hassle, it’s not solving your problem.

That’s why a carpet cleaner with a Hassle-Free Factor of 9 beats one that cleans slightly better but scores a 6 on hassle. Every. Single. Time. Higher Hassle-Free Factor = less hassle. Simple as that.

What I’m tracking every time I use it
☑How easy is it to fill the clean-water tank?
☑How gross is emptying the dirty-water tank?
☑Do I have to rinse parts out after every use?
☑Is it heavy or awkward to push and haul out?
☑Does the hose & tool reach stairs and edges?
☑Did it leave the carpet soaked, or nearly dry?
☑Did I ever say “ugh, not worth it”?

★ The Thesis

Dad’s Common Sense, not a staged demo.

Every carpet cleaner ad shows the same thing: a perfect wine stain vanishing in one pass on brand-new showroom carpet. That’s not your house. The best machine in a demo is useless if it soaks your carpet, is a nightmare to empty, and can’t touch a real set-in pet stain. So I built a different system.

☑ The 4-Stage Journey

How every carpet cleaner gets put through it.

1
Stage 1 — JAD Studios, Litchfield, IL

Unbox, set up, and stain-test.

◉ About 1 week
Every carpet cleaner lands at the studio first. I unbox it on camera, walk through the specs that actually matter, and set it up — tanks, solution, attachments and all — because that first fill-and-go is where a lot of machines already start to lose people. Then I lay down my standard set of torture stains — red wine, coffee, dirt paste, ketchup, and a pet-accident stand-in — let them set, and see what actually lifts. If the manufacturer ran a flashy one-pass stain ad, I hold them to it.
2
Stage 2 — My Actual House

Live with it for 1 to 3 months.

◉ 1–3 months
This is the stage that separates this site from every staged demo online. The carpet cleaner comes home and gets used on the real thing — muddy entryways, kid spills, and the dog’s occasional accident. If it’s a chore to fill, a mess to empty, or leaves the carpet soaked for hours, its Hassle-Free Factor score is going down fast. I also time how long the carpet actually takes to dry, because a clean carpet you can’t walk on for six hours isn’t much of a win.
3
Stage 3 — Back to the Studio

Empty the tank and see the truth.

◉ Hands-on, on camera
After the real-world stretch, the machine comes back for a teardown. I pour out the dirty-water tank on camera — brown, filthy water is the proof it actually pulled the grime up and out. Clear water means it wet your carpet without extracting much. Then I run the full maintenance routine — rinsing tanks, clearing the brushroll, cleaning filters and nozzles — on video. If upkeep is a nightmare, that’s a strike. If it’s simple, that’s a feature worth knowing about.
4
Stage 4 — The Honest Verdict

Cost to Own, scoring, and the sticker.

◉ Score → Sticker (or no sticker)
Once it’s been through three stages, I score it across five categories — each out of 10, higher is always better. Then I calculate the Cost to Own: the ongoing price of cleaning solution, filters, and pads that nobody puts on the box. If it earns the score, it gets the Dad Approved sticker. If it doesn’t, I tell you exactly why. The sticker isn’t a logo — it’s a promise that I’d hand this machine to my mom or my in-laws.

★ Scoring

The five categories, all out of 10.

Every score is on the review page, every score has a video behind it, and every score combines studio stain tests with real-home use. Higher is always better — 10 means it crushed it, 1 means it failed. No fancy math. Just honest numbers any dad can read.

Hassle-Free Factor

The score that separates this site from every staged demo. 10 means it’s a joy to use. 1 means it’s a 20-minute chore for a 5-minute job. Dads are busy — this matters most.
•How easy the tanks are to fill and empty
•Rinse-out and cleanup after every use
•Weight, push, and haul-out effort
•Hose & tool reach for stairs and edges
•Did I ever say “ugh, not worth it”?

Stain & Deep-Clean Power

The real test: set-in stains, not showroom carpet. 10 means it lifts old, dried pet accidents. 1 means it only touches fresh spills.

•Actual measured dry time on real carpet
•How much water the machine pulls back out
•Dirty-water tank — is it filthy or clear?
•No musty smell left behind
