The Original Story - Why I Recommended It

When the Dreame L40 Ultra released, it was a genuinely advanced robot. The feature set read like a flagship: hot water mop washing, dirt detect sensor in the dock, side brush corner reach, mop pads that extend to walls and baseboards, and an all-in-one automatic dock workflow that handled the wash-and-dry cycle without intervention.

At first impression, I liked it. Mop performance scored 8/10 — the strongest category number on the scorecard, and a number that holds up against current flagships. The original recommendation was earned.

Why My Recommendation Needs Updating

The mop pad reinstall issue is what surfaced with longer-term testing. The L40 Ultra's dock removes the mop pads when the robot heads out for a carpet-only run — a smart feature in theory, since wet pads shouldn't drag across carpet.

The failure mode: the dock sometimes can't get the pads back on the robot after the carpet run is done. The user has to manually reinstall them. That's not a one-time hiccup; it's a recurring monthly hassle that drops the hassle-free factor from where it should be (8 or 9) to 7. This review is the public update to that original recommendation.

Cleaning Performance: What It Actually Picks Up

Hard Floor & Tile Performance

On hardwood and tile, the Dreame L40 Ultra is competent. 11,000 Pa is mid-range — not flagship-class but enough for daily debris. Side brush extends into corners, mop pads extend to baseboards, and edge cleaning is genuinely good.

Carpet and Pet Hair

Carpet at 7/10. Hair tangle at 6/10 without the TriCut upgrade — the long-hair ad claim FAILED in formal Ad vs Reality testing because the stock brush doesn't handle it. Plan to budget for the TriCut brush if you have long-haired pets.

Mopping Performance - Where It Wins

Obstacle Avoidance

Camera + LiDAR navigation handles standard clutter. The stain auto-detection ad claim FAILED, though — Tom couldn't reliably get it to detect stains in real-world testing. Standard obstacle avoidance is fine; AI-driven stain detection is not.

The Mova App Experience

The app is functional and not flashy, which is what I want. You get scheduling, room-by-room cleaning selection, no-go zones, suction and water level controls, and a live map view. It's not as polished as the Roborock app — fewer animations, slightly less obvious where some settings live — but everything I needed was there within a tap or two.

Wi-Fi pairing was clean. Voice control through Alexa works. Notifications come through reliably when the bin needs emptying or a cycle finishes. No complaints worth flagging.

When the Dreame L40 Ultra Still Makes Sense

• The Mova P10 Pro Ultra isn't available in your region or to your timing.
• A deep discount puts real distance between the Dreame L40 Ultra's price and the Mova P10 Pro Ultra's.
• You already own one and want confirmation it's still serviceable — it is, when the pads reinstall.

Outside those scenarios, take the Mova P10 Pro Ultra. The recommendation is that clear.

Same feature set, similar price, more reliable design. The Mova P10 Pro Ultra doesn't remove its mop pads — it lifts them. Same advantage on carpet runs, no failure mode.

Dreame L40 Ultra vs Dreame X40 Ultra

Step-up flagship. The Dreame X40 Ultra has mop pad drop-off (similar to the Dreame L40 Ultra's approach) but the implementation is more reliable. If you want the full advanced-dock feature set and can find the Dreame X40 Ultra at a reasonable price, that's the better Dreame buy.

Dreame L40 Ultra vs Dreame L40s Ultra

The Dreame L40s Ultra is the newer L40-series flagship. Solid mopping (7/10 vs the L40 Ultra's 8/10), but real corner reach, no mop pad reinstall issue, and a falling price since November 2025 launch. The Dreame L40s Ultra is the right L40-series upgrade.
