3 Months of Real Use in My Home
The Dreame X40 Ultra is almost two years old. At launch, it was a true flagship — and the feature list still reads like one. Hot water mop washing, hot air drying, dirt detection in the dock, solution tank, side brush corner reach, mop pad wall reach, and the ability to leave the mop pads at the base station for carpet-only runs.
After 3 months of testing in my home, the X40 still delivers. I’m glad Dreame is still making it. The price has been coming down as the model ages, which is what makes this a smart buy today.
What's in the Box and First Setup
Setup runs about 15 minutes. The Dreame app handles Wi-Fi pairing (2.4 GHz only) and the first mapping pass automatically. The Dreame X40 was my introduction to the Dreame ecosystem — the app is solid, pairing is quick, and the learning curve is minimal.
What's in the box: the robot, the all-in-one PowerDock with mop pad drop-off zone, the solution bottle, a starter dust bag, mop pads, the side brush, and the charging cable.
Cleaning Performance: What It Actually Picks Up
Hard Floor & Tile Performance
On hardwood and tile, the X40 is competent. 12,000 Pa is the X40's weakest spec on paper — the X60 Ultra runs 35,000 Pa, the D30 Ultra runs 25,000 Pa. In real-world testing the gap is smaller than the spec numbers suggest — on-floor cleaning scored 8/10. Combined with the hot water mop system, the X40 delivers a complete clean despite the lower suction number.
Carpet and Pet Hair
Carpet at 8/10 — competitive with newer mid-tier robots despite the 12,000 Pa rating. Hair tangle at 7/10 — decent out of the box, but the TriCut brush upgrade is recommended for long-hair households (extra purchase, not included).
Mopping Performance - The Real Win
Mop performance at 8/10. The dock washes the mop pads with hot water (158°F) and dries them with hot air. Pads get deeply clean between rooms and don't stay damp at the dock between cycles. Mop pads extend to walls and baseboards for real edge cleaning.
Mop Pad Drop-Off — The Quiet Killer Feature
This is the feature that quietly matters most for mixed-flooring homes. For carpet-only cleaning runs, the Dreame X40 leaves its mop pads at the dock — no soggy pads getting dragged across rugs. Almost every budget and mid-tier robot fakes this with a lift mechanism that still leaves the pads on the robot. The Dreame X40 actually drops them off at the dock. Combined with OmniDirt auto re-cleaning, this is a workflow that compounds over months of daily use.
Edge and Corner Cleaning
Side brush extends into corners. Mop pads extend to walls and baseboards. The Dreame L10s Ultra family doesn't have this combination. Most budget robots don't. The Dreame X40 is a flagship feature set at a non-flagship price.
Obstacle Avoidance
RGB AI camera + 3D structured light navigation. Strong real-world performance — doesn't get stuck. OmniDirt sensor in the dock auto re-cleans rooms that need it.
The Dock and the Real Maintenance Story
Full advanced-dock feature set: auto-empty (75 days), hot water mop wash (158°F), hot air drying, OmniDirt dirt detect, solution tank, and mop pad drop-off. The only real con: the dock can be a little hard to clean. Some surfaces are recessed enough that hands-and-knees work is required. Every Dreame advanced dock has some version of this issue — the Dreame X40 isn't worse than the rest, just not better.
The Suction Conversation
12,000 Pa is the Dreame X40's weakest spec on paper. The Dreame X60 Ultra runs 35,000 Pa. The Dreame D30 Ultra runs 25,000 Pa. The Dreame L60 Pro Ultra runs 35,000 Pa. In real-world testing, the Dreame X40's on-floor cleaning still holds up — carpet scored 8/10. But the gap is real. Buyers who want the strongest possible suction will be better served by a current-generation flagship. Buyers who care about overall cleaning workflow more than raw spec numbers are exactly the Dreame X40's audience.

The Dreame X60 Ultra is the current flagship with stronger suction (35,000 Pa vs 12,000), AI-assisted features, and the latest dock improvements. The Dreame X40 has the same core advanced-dock DNA — hot water, hot air, dirt detect, solution tank, mop pad drop-off — at a meaningfully lower price. If you don't need the absolute latest, the Dreame X40 is the smarter buy.
Dreame X40 Ultra vs MOVA P10 Pro Ultra
Different tiers. The Mova P10 Pro Ultra is the smart upper-mid pick — good cleaning, refined design, dock dirt detect. But it doesn't have mop pad drop-off or solution tank. The Dreame X40 sits above it with the full advanced-dock feature set. If your budget stretches to the Dreame X40 on sale, take it over the Mova P10 Pro Ultra.
Dreame X40 Ultra vs Dreame L40s Ultra
Cross-shop within current Dreame stack. The Dreame L40s Ultra has higher suction (19,000 Pa vs 12,000) and the HyperStream DuoBrush. The Dreame X40 has mop pad drop-off and dock dirt detect (the L40s Ultra is missing both). For dock workflow, take the Dreame X40. For raw vacuum power, take the Dreame L40s Ultra.
