The Dyson Spot+Scrub AI is Dyson's first robot vacuum — and an attempt at redemption after the brand's earlier 360 Vis Nav got mixed reviews. After 2 months of testing on hardwood, carpet, dog hair, and the dried-on soy sauce that I used to stress-test mop systems, the verdict lands at 7.2/10 — Just A Dad Approved with caveats.
Worth noting upfront: Dyson didn't actually build this robot themselves. It was built in collaboration with Picea, who also builds robots for iRobot. So if you had a bad experience with the Roomba 705, you'll see some of that same navigation DNA here. The hardware is solid Dyson engineering, but the navigation feels familiar from the Roomba lineage.
What's in the Box and First Setup
Setup runs about 15 minutes. The MyDyson app handles Wi-Fi pairing (2.4 GHz only) and the first mapping pass. The dock is taller than typical robot docks because of the bagless cyclonic design — it takes up real countertop or floor space.

Hard Floor & Tile Performance
On hardwood and tile, the Dyson Spot+Scrub AI delivers. Strong suction (Dyson doesn't publish a PA rating, but real-world pickup is competitive with mid-tier flagships), 100% crumb pickup in formal testing, and the Fluffy Optic green LED illumination helps the camera spot fine debris in low light. The mopping is where it really shines.
Carpet and Pet Hair
Carpet at 7.5/10. The single anti-tangle brush bar with comb handles standard pet hair well — strong auto-empty meant no clogs in testing. Hair tangle at 6/10. The weakness: no active hair-cutting on the brush roller, so long-haired pet households will be pulling hair off the roller manually. The bigger carpet issue: no mop roller cover during carpet runs, so the wet roller drags on medium-pile carpet.
Mopping Performance - The Big Win
One of the best hot-water systems Tom has tested. The dock fills the on-board water tank with 140°F hot water, and the same hot water plus hot air is used to self-clean the mop roller after each run. The mop roller comes out genuinely clean. The back-and-forth scrubbing motion on AI-detected stains is genuinely effective — it’s one of the best at using heated water.
Edge and Corner Cleaning - The Weakness
The side brushes don't extend, the body shape can't reach into 90-degree corners, and there's no mop roller cover. If corner cleaning is a priority, this isn't the right robot. The shifting brush bar does slide from side to side, which helps along straight walls — but actual 90° corners get missed.
Obstacle Avoidance and the Green Light Quirk
LiDAR + HD camera handle standard clutter well. The Fluffy Optic green light on the front illuminates dust for the camera (and looks futuristic). The catch: the stain detection AI can get obsessive — I watched it re-clean the same spot nine times before manually sending it home. When debris and stains are close to the same height, it'll bump around an area for a while figuring things out.
The Bagless Dock — Genuinely Best in Class
This is the headline feature. The dock uses the same cyclonic technology from Dyson's stick vacuums — 10 root cyclones — to spin debris off the filter so airflow stays strong instead of choking up over time. No dust bags ever. No airflow loss as the bin fills. The transparent dustbin lets you see exactly when to empty it.
The trade-offs: the dock is loud during mop washing. There's no dirt detect sensor in the base (Tom actually likes that — fewer false-positive re-cleans). And the bin needs more frequent manual emptying than a 75-day or 100-day bagged dock. For households that hate the recurring spend on vacuum bags, this is the best bagless dock in the category.
The App Problem
The MyDyson app is the weakest part of the package. The map is black-and-white only, which makes it hard to see where carpet is versus hardwood — you're guessing at floor type. Room splits are locked to 90-degree angles; you can't move a split at a different angle, which limits how your house can be configured. Every room has to be told individually how you want it cleaned each time — there's no "do the whole house" quick button. The app is better than the 360 Vis Nav's app, but it's still missing features a 2026 flagship robot should have.
Cost to Own — A Real Selling Point
This is one of the cheaper flagships to own long-term. The bagless cyclonic dock means you never buy dust bags. Only generic replacement kits are available (Dyson doesn't sell OEM parts for this model individually), and the math works out to LOW tier annual cost — about $207/year all-in for generic kits plus solution. For buyers who are nervous about recurring costs at the flagship tier, this is a meaningful counterargument.

Both flagship tier. The Dreame is 3.13" slim (fits under furniture the Dyson can't reach), has real corner cleaning, and the Dreame app is more mature. The Dyson has the best bagless dock in the category and stronger hot-water mopping. Pick the Dreame for tight homes; pick the Dyson for open spaces where the bagless workflow matters.

Generational upgrade. The Spot+Scrub Ai adds wet+dry mopping (the 360 Vis Nav was vacuum-only), AI stain detection, and a much better app. If you're upgrading from the 360 Vis Nav, this is a significant step forward — even with the remaining navigation and app limits.
