After three months of daily use on hardwood and carpet, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim earned the Just A Dad sticker, and it's one of my top picks. This Dyson V12 Detect Slim review comes down to one thing that no other vacuum I’ve tested can match: it is the lightest cordless vacuum he knows of, and it still cleans like the heavy ones. Add amazing suction, HEPA filtration, a long battery, and no trigger to hold, and the only real catch is a small dust bin you'll empty often.

Which V12 Detect Slim Is This One?

My unit came with both power heads — the Digital Motorbar head for carpet and general cleaning, and the slim soft-roller head with the green light for hard floors — and he swaps between them. Worth knowing before you order: this vacuum goes in and out of stock, and the listings you'll find sometimes sell it with just the carpet head, or just the hard-floor head with the green light. Check what's in the box. The tools look like every other Dyson's, but they're smaller-diameter versions made for the V12's slimmer tube, so they're specific to this model.

The Lightest Cordless I’ve Tested

Dyson lists it at about 5.2 pounds, and it feels lighter than that number in the hand. Everything else in this review sits behind that fact. For an older person, or anyone with arthritis or a bad shoulder who can't hold a heavy vacuum, this is the one I would hand you first — and unlike most lightweight vacuums, you don't give up cleaning power to get there. It does an amazing job, the kind of job some really heavy vacuums do.

The Detection Package

Auto Mode and the LCD Screen

A sensor counts the dust coming up the tube. In auto mode it ramps the suction up when it's picking up a lot and backs it down when the floor is clean — that's how it stretches the battery. The LCD on the back of the handle shows what it's picked up by particle size, the power mode, and the run time left, so you clean until the numbers stop climbing and move on.

The Green Light on Hard Floors

The slim soft-roller head throws a green light out ahead of the roller at a low angle. On hardwood and tile it lights up the fine dust you'd never see in normal room light, and the soft roller pulls it in without scattering it. It's for hard floors only — the Motorbar head goes back on for carpet.

Cleaning Performance: What It Actually Picked Up

Carpet

Carpet scored a 9.2. The suction is the surprise here: It is amazing, and on carpet it pulls up what a much heavier vacuum would. The Motorbar head does the work, and the vacuum is so light you're not fighting it across the room.

Hard Floors

Hard floors scored a 9.2. With the soft roller head on, it lays the dust down and pulls it in instead of flinging it, and the green light shows you what you'd have missed. This is where the V12 feels best — light, quiet, and thorough.

Long Hair and Pet Hair

Long hair scored a 9.2. The anti-tangle Motorbar head strips hair off the brush bar as it turns, and the Dyson cyclones send hair down into the bin instead of onto the filter screen. I didn't have to cut hair off the roller. The one thing to plan on: hair takes up bin space, and the bin is small.

Battery and Run Time

Battery scored an 8. Dyson rates it at up to 60 minutes in Eco, and auto mode helps you get there by dropping the suction whenever the floor is clean. Max mode drains it fast — treat it as a short burst for a bad spot. For the small home or apartment this vacuum is built for, a charge covers the whole place; in a large house you'll feel the limit. Charge it on the wall dock.

The Dust Bin — the One Real Catch

The bin is small — about 0.1 gallon — and it fills up quickly. In a big house with pets you'll be emptying it partway through a clean. Emptying is easy: point it at the trash, push the lever, done. It's just something you'll do a lot. If that sounds annoying, this isn't your vacuum; if you have a smaller home and don't mind it, it's a fair trade for the weight.

Handling and Storage

Like every Dyson cordless, it doesn't stand up on its own. Lean it against a wall or a counter and it has a tendency to fall over. It comes with a dock you mount on the wall — give it a spot near an outlet and the problem goes away. There's no trigger: you turn it on and it stays running, which is a big deal for anyone with hand or wrist trouble. It converts to a handheld in seconds and lies flat to get under furniture.

What I Would Change on the V12 Detect Slim

  • A bigger dust bin — it's the one thing that slows you down
  • A way to stand it up on its own without the wall dock
  • Bring the price tier down — it costs a lot for a small-home vacuum

Is It Worth It?

For an older buyer, anyone who can't handle a heavy vacuum, or a small home or apartment — absolutely. It's the lightest cordless I’ve tested, it has amazing suction, HEPA filtration, a long battery, and no trigger to hold. It's Just A Dad Approved and one of my top picks. If you have a big house with big messes, the small bin will wear on you, and if you're on a budget, look at the alternatives. Check the live price on the button before you decide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Buyer Questions
Is the Dyson V12 Detect Slim really that light?+

Yes. Dyson lists it at about 5.2 pounds, and it's the lightest cordless vacuum I know of. That's the reason to buy it — it's the one I recommend for older people or anyone with arthritis who can't hold a heavy vacuum, and it still cleans like a heavy one.

Do you have to hold a trigger on the V12 Detect Slim?+

Small — about 0.1 gallon. It's the one real downside: it fills up quickly and you empty it a lot. Emptying is easy, it's just frequent. Fine for a small home or apartment; a chore in a big house with pets.

Does the Dyson V12 Detect Slim stand up on its own?+

No. Like every Dyson cordless, it charges on a wall-mounted dock and it tips over if you lean it against something. Plan on mounting the dock.

Which cleaning head comes with it?+

It depends on the listing. My unit came with both the Motorbar carpet head and the slim soft-roller head with the green light, but this vacuum goes in and out of stock and some listings ship it with only one of the two. Check the box contents before you buy. The tools are smaller-diameter versions of the standard Dyson tools, made for the V12.

How long does the battery last?+

Up to 60 minutes in Eco, and auto mode stretches it by dropping suction when the floor is clean. Max mode is a short burst. Plenty for a small home; you'll feel the limit in a big one.
