No — at least not yet. The Roomba 205 DustCompactor has the most interesting new idea I've seen in the budget tier in a while: a motorized paddle inside a larger dust bin that compresses debris, with iRobot pitching up to 60 days between empties. If that holds up, it's a real quality-of-life upgrade. The problem is I couldn't verify it — iRobot's marketing, manual, and app all leave the headline feature completely undocumented. Strip away the compactor and it's just a Roomba 105 with a bigger bin. At MSRP, the competition is simply too strong.

What Makes the 205 Different

The Roomba 205's headline feature is a dust-compacting bin. A motorized paddle inside the dust bin moves debris from side to side, compacting it as the robot vacuums. iRobot's pitch is up to 60 days between manual empties. The dust bin itself is noticeably larger than the 105's, and the robot does not have a self-empty base. The compactor is meant to replace the self-empty dock concept by doing the compression onboard, in the robot. That's a real engineering investment and a different answer to the "hands-free maintenance" question than the rest of the industry is giving.

What I couldn't verify in this video: how often the compactor actually runs. Roomba's marketing doesn't say. The manual doesn't say. The app doesn't say. I didn't observe the compactor trigger during the test cleaning. This is the central data gap in the first-look review and it's the reason the full three-month test matters.

What Works

LiDAR Navigation Is the Right Foundation

Spinning LiDAR under a small dome on top of the robot. Mapped the studio quickly and accurately. Vacuumed in straight lines once mapped. Same observation across the new Roomba family — LiDAR mapping is consistently the strongest part of the experience.

The Big Dust Bin Is a Real Upgrade

The compactor bin is meaningfully larger than the 105's. Even without the compactor working, the increased capacity alone reduces emptying frequency. Big filter inside — likely paper, looks reusable, but iRobot doesn't explicitly say.

The Slim Profile

Right at 4 inches tall — the LiDAR is under a low shelf on the chassis, not on top of the dome. Should fit under more furniture than top-LiDAR robots. This is a real selling point for tight spaces and a meaningful differentiator from the rest of the new Roomba lineup.

The Roomba Home App

Same observation as the rest of the new Roomba lineup — the redesigned Roomba Home app is a real upgrade over the legacy iRobot app. Mapping, room editor, keep-out zones, and clean zones all work. The settings panel for the mid-cleaning suction adjustment was buggy and didn't show all options on the iPad I was using — may be device-specific. Worth flagging for verification when the three-month test runs.

The Carpet Sensor

Unlike the 105 vacuum-only, the 205 has a carpet sensor — important because it ships with a mop pad attachment. When the pad is installed, the robot detects and avoids carpet. It cannot lift the pad; it just stays away from the carpet entirely. Same partial-solution approach as the 105 + Mop family

What Doesn't Work

Obstacle Avoidance Is Essentially Absent

Same as the Plus 405 and the 105 family. The front sensor is for docking, not obstacles. In the corner test the 205 ran over a toy and a cable. On one pass it detected the toy when approaching it head-on but missed it from the side. "What's that sensor on the front for?" — fair question. The 2.0/10 score is one tick higher than the 105 family's 1.5 only because of that single head-on toy detection.

Setup Was Rough

Docking didn't power the robot on automatically — I had to manually align the charging contacts. First Wi-Fi pairing attempt failed and required a full cancel-and-restart. The Plus 405 had also failed setup the same day I unboxed the 205, which raises real questions about quality control across the new Roomba lineup. Once connected, the 20-minute firmware update worked, so the robot itself is probably fine. But the out-of-box experience needs work, especially at this price point.

The Mop Is the Same Drag-Only Design

Same as the 105 + Mop. The pad cannot lift, no down-pressure, no scrub motion. The water pump keeps it wet. I didn't test mopping in this first-look video because the dock was placed on carpet. The 5.5/10 mop score is preliminary and inherited from the 105 family's verified mop behavior.

Mid-Clean Suction Adjustment Doesn't Work

On the coffee test I wanted to increase suction part-way through and the app would not let me — whatever I had it set at before the run, that's what it ran with. This is standard on most modern robots and is a real miss here. Compounds the Hassle-Free Factor penalty.

No Documentation on the Compactor

How often does the compactor run? Once a week? Once a month? After every clean? iRobot's marketing doesn't say, the manual doesn't say, the app doesn't say. The headline feature is undocumented. This needs more testing time, and iRobot needs to be more descriptive in their marketing. Without that data, prospective buyers can't make an informed decision on whether the compactor delivers the "60 days between empties" promise.

Pricing Is the Recurring Problem

Same pattern as the rest of the new Roomba lineup. The Mova S10 Plus is around half the 205's MSRP on sale, the Dreame L10s has hit deep-discount territory, and the Roborock Qrevo S sits in the same broad tier — all with better mop hardware and at least some real obstacle avoidance. The compactor bin is novel but isn't worth the price gap on its own.

Better mop (with lift), better hair handling, more capable app. For most buyers shopping the budget-mid tier, the S10 Plus is the smarter spend even before factoring in the 205's unproven compactor mechanism.

Roomba 205 vs Dreame L10s

The L10s has hit sale pricing well below the Roomba 205's MSRP and delivers a meaningfully more capable feature set: real obstacle avoidance, lifting mop, tri-cut brush design. Better than the 205 on the dimensions that matter most for daily ownership.

Roomba 205 vs Roomba 105 + Mop with AutoEmpty Dock

Inside the Roomba family, the 205 and the 105 + Mop with AutoEmpty are answering the same question — "how do I reduce manual maintenance?" — with two different mechanisms. The 105 uses an external self-empty dock. The 205 uses an onboard compactor. Same underlying platform, different maintenance philosophy. The 105 + AutoEmpty has the better-documented mechanism; the 205 has the slimmer profile and no dock footprint. Pick based on which trade-off matters more for your space.
