IS THE IROBOT ROOMBA VAC ROBOT VACUUM (Q0120) WORTH IT?
✓ Why Dad Likes It
Nothing stood out enough to make my pros list
− What To Know
Bumper-only navigation — no mapping, no no-go zones
No mop — vacuum only
Charging dock only
BOTTOM LINE: Is the iRobot Roomba Vac Robot Vacuum (Q0120) Just a Dad Approved?
It is NOT Just a Dad Approved. It does an okay job on hard floors and carpet — I'll give it that — but there's no mapping, no no-go zones, and no way to keep it out of a room besides a physical barrier. It'll run over cables and small toys and can get stuck. I bought this one myself, and I'll say flat out I wouldn't spend the money on it. Overall Dad Score: 3.0/10. Skip it.

Who Is It For?
Buyer Fit
Buy It If
You want the absolute simplest, most basic entry-level bumper-bot for a small, uncluttered space
Skip It If
You want any form of mapping or no-go zones
You have cables, toys, or clutter on the floor regularly
You want to spend money on a robot I don't think is worth it
I bought the Roomba Vac Robot Vacuum (Q0120) myself to test it — another entry in the Essential family, and another Skip It.
Navigation and Cleaning Performance
Real mapping and no-go zones would fix my main complaint here — there's no virtual wall support, no magnetic strips, nothing to keep it out of a specific room besides a physical barrier. Budget robots with real LiDAR navigation, like the Yeedi L50, run circles around this thing on navigation for similar money. It'll vacuum an apartment or small house with minimal clutter okay enough, but I'd skip it if you want anything close to smart navigation.
Is It Worth It?
No. Skip it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common Buyer Questions
Does the Roomba Vac Essential (Q0120) map my house?+
No. It's bumper-only navigation with no saved map you can edit. It does generate a cleaning report that looks like a rough map after the fact, and that report is fairly accurate — but you can't use it to set no-go zones.
Can I set no-go zones or keep it out of a room?+
Not through the app — no virtual walls, no magnetic strips. The only way to keep it away from something is a physical barrier.
Does it mop?+
No, this is the vacuum-only model.
Does this version have an auto-empty dock?+
No — this is the charging-only dock. It charges the robot but you empty the bin by hand.
Is this a good robot vacuum for a small apartment?+
It'll do an okay job in a smaller space without a lot of clutter on the floor. For anything bigger, or a home with cables and toys around, the lack of mapping and no-go zones becomes a real problem.
