3 Months of Real Use in My Home

After three months of real use across carpet, spot messes, and the usual kid-and-pet chaos, the Shark CarpetXpert with StainStriker earned the Just A Dad sticker. It's really two machines in one: a full upright that deep-cleans a whole room, and a built-in StainStriker hose that spot-treats a bad mess without dragging out a second tool. It cleaned every stain I threw at it and it's surprisingly light to push. A couple of quirks are worth knowing before you buy, and I'll be straight about those. Here's how it held up.

What's in the Box and First Setup

You get the upright, the onboard flex hose, a 3.5-inch reversible-bristle stain tool, an integrated crevice tool, the Pet Mess Extractor tool, a hose-cleaning tool, and a removable brush roller with a rinse-out filter in the dirty tank. Setup is quick, but there's one thing that surprised me on day one: the green lights just flash until you kick the handle back past center — then it powers on.

The Two Tanks — and the Oxy Multiplier Mix-Up

This is the thing I got wrong at first, so let me save you the confusion: there are two solution tanks, and they do different jobs. The big Deep Clean tank is what cleans your carpet — you fill water to the line, then concentrate to the line (hot tap water is fine up to 140°F). The small blue Oxy Multiplier tank is NOT for the carpet — it only feeds the StainStriker hose when you're spot-treating a mess. I assumed the blue stuff went down on the whole floor too; it doesn't, and Shark doesn't say much about it. Fill the Oxy Multiplier full strength (16 oz max, don't dilute it).

Cleaning Performance: What It Actually Picks Up

Everyday Stains

I put down ketchup, Hershey syrup, and grape jelly. In deep-clean mode it lays the solution down on its own — no trigger to hold — and it pulled the stains right up and did a really good job. The jelly took a couple extra passes and I'd probably hit the ketchup one more time, but overall I was really happy with it. Suction is good too; the carpet came up only a touch damp.

The StainStriker Hose and Pet Messes

The built-in hose is the reason to buy this over a plain upright. It lives right on the machine, so the spot tools are always there when you need them. For a bad pet accident the Pet Mess Extractor tool is the star — it catches the gross stuff in its own little filter instead of sending it down the whole hose, then pops off so you dump just that filter. I didn't run a full pet-hair test, but for wet pet messes it works really well.

The Push-Forward / Pull-Back Switch

Here's another one Shark doesn't talk about much, and it's worth knowing so you don't fight the machine. There's a micro-switch in the base tied to which way you're moving: push the handle FORWARD and it sprays solution and water down onto the carpet; pull it BACK and the spray shuts off so you're just pulling water up with suction. Once it clicks, it's intuitive — wash on the push, dry on the pull — but nobody tells you that going in.

Ease of Use

It's light to push and pull, which honestly surprised me for a machine that does this much. Two buttons up top with a sticker that shows the modes, and the hose and tools store right on board. The one gripe: when you fill the deep-clean tank, water gets into the handle and spills when you go to set it back on the machine — so pour carefully. The onboard hose also didn't always want to stay stowed; I had to give it a twist to lock it down.

Maintenance Reality — Including the Nozzle Clog

Day-to-day cleanup is easy: the dirty tank pops off and dumps, and there's a filter inside you rinse and dry before it snaps back. The brush roller comes out for cleaning too. Two real things to know. First, when you switch from the hose back to the floor, it dumps the leftover pressure out of the hose — I'd pull the trigger with it off first to bleed it. Second, and this is the big one: the little spray nozzles in the cleaning head that spray water and solution onto the carpet clogged up on me at around six months. It was easy to clean, but genuinely tricky to find where they are — so I made a separate video walking through exactly how to clear them.

Is It Worth It?

For a home with carpet, kids, and pets, yes. You get a whole-room deep clean and a built-in spot hose in one light, easy-to-push machine, and it cleans everything I put in front of it. Just go in knowing the honest trade-offs: the blue Oxy Multiplier is hose-only, you're locked into Shark's two formulas so keep a spare on hand, and plan on clearing the spray nozzles somewhere around the six-month mark. Work around those and it does the job well, which is why it earned the Just A Dad Approved sticker. If you only ever spot-clean one room, though, a small portable is plenty and a lot less machine.
