3 Months of Real Use in My Home

After three months of real use across carpet and hard floors — with pets and long hair in the mix — the Shark Detect Pro Speed Lift-Away (LA742) earned the Just A Dad sticker and became one my #1 corded upright vacuum cleaners. The reasons are simple: it senses the floor and adjusts itself, a light actually tells you when the carpet's clean, it keeps long hair off the roller, and the foot-tap Lift-Away makes the whole thing easy. Here's exactly how it held up.

What's in the Box and First Setup

There's a little assembly out of the box, but nothing that needs a manual. You wrap the 25-foot cord on the onboard holder, and the crevice tool and dusting/anti-allergen brush store right on the machine. The head runs two brushrolls plus four detect sensors, and if you want the optional scent, you pop in the odor-neutralizer cartridge.

Cleaning Performance: What It Actually Picks Up

Carpet Performance

On carpet it's the smart cleaning that sells it. I ran it in Detect mode and it jumped into the Boost mode on its own — the light went purple to tell me it was still finding dirt — then turned white when the spot was actually clean. That clean-floor indicator is the star; you're not guessing whether you got it. It cleaned right down to the white light every pass.

Hard Wood Performance

On hardwood the Floor Detect senses the bare floor and auto-slows the roller so it isn't scattering debris across the room, and it moves real easy. The clean indicator works here too, so you know when you're done. Between the auto-slow roller and the light, hardwood is basically hands-off.

Long Hair and Pet Pickup

This is where it shines for a pet or long-hair house. I checked the long hair after a run and it kept it right off the filter — no wrap on the roller at all. The anti-tangle rollers with combs strip hair as you clean, and the sealed Anti-Allergen Complete Seal with HEPA keeps the fine stuff in. If shedding pets or long hair are your headache, this is the reason to buy it.

Ease of Use

The foot-tap Speed Lift-Away is my favorite kind — you tap it with your foot, lift the pod for stairs and furniture, and the wand pulls out for above-floor jobs. It's lightweight, rolls back and forth easily, and the four detect sensors mean you mostly just set it to Detect mode and go. The one knock is the bin: it's on the small side, so you'll empty it a little more often.

Maintenance Reality

Upkeep is light but not zero. There are two reusable foam filters to wash, plus a HEPA. When the indicator flashes red, that's your cue to wipe the little dirt-detect sensor windows so it keeps reading the floor right. The optional odor cartridge and the HEPA get replaced about every 6 months. And because the bagless bin is small, empty it more often and blow it out once in a while.

The Vertex is the powerhouse with a bigger bin, but it makes you slide the suction vent by hand and its Powered Lift-Away release is fussier. The LA742 adds the auto floor-detect, the clean-floor light, and my preferred foot-tap Lift-Away, and it runs cheaper on sale. Unless you specifically want the Vertex's bigger bin or raw power, this is the one I'd hand you first.
