After three months of daily use across hardwood, tile, and carpet, the Shark PowerDetect earned the Just A Dad sticker. It's my current #1 cordless recommendation, and the reasons are simple: it cleans in both directions, it figures out the floor and the dirt for you, and it doesn't wrap hair around the roller. Here's exactly how it held up.
What's in the Box and First Setup
In the box you get the vacuum, the removable battery, the charging cable, an 8" Duster Crevice Tool, and the Pet Multi-Tool. There's a little assembly, but nothing that needs a manual to figure out. The first thing to do is charge the battery — plug the cable straight into the vacuum (you don't have to pull the battery out to charge it). The status light pulses yellow while it's charging and goes solid white when it's full.

Hard Floor and Tile Performance
On hardwood and tile the PowerDetect is easy to like. The FloorDetect sensor slows the brush roll down on hard floors so it isn't kicking debris across the room, then speeds it back up on carpet. You feel the difference — it's lighter and more controlled on hardwood than on carpet.
Carpet and Pet Hair
Carpet is where it works hardest — and where you feel the one trade-off. It cleans the carpet well and the anti-hair-wrap roller keeps the brush clear the whole test window (no cutting hair off with scissors), but on thick, plush carpet it gets heavy to push and pull. On low and medium piles it's fine.
Reverse Cleaning
This is the headline feature and it's not marketing fluff. Most vacuums only grab debris on the forward push and shove it around on the pull-back. The DuoClean Detect nozzle picks up in both directions, so each pass does double duty and a room goes faster.
The Detect Sensors
- Dirt Detect — senses hidden dirt and ramps suction up automatically. The nozzle lights glow purple when the floor's still dirty and turn white when it's clean, so you know when to stop.
- Edge Detect — senses when you're up against a wall or baseboard and boosts suction to pull in the edge dirt.

Battery & Runtime
Shark rates it at up to 70 minutes, but read the fine print — that's ECO mode, measured at the handvac. In PowerDetect (auto) and Boost you'll get less, because the suction is ramping up when it hits dirt. For most whole-home cleans that's still plenty, and the battery pops out if you ever want a spare. This is the category where I docked the score a touch — real-world runtime in the higher modes is shorter than the headline number.
Maintenance Reality
Emptying is genuinely easy — press the button and the dust cup slides open over the trash. To deep-clean, another button releases the whole bin so you can take it to the sink. There's a washable pre-motor filter set inside that you rinse and reuse; the HEPA element is more of a paper-style filter, so treat that as a replace-when-worn part rather than a wash-and-reuse one. The roller has a comb built in to strip long hair.
Storage — the One Quirk
Worth repeating because it surprises people: it doesn't free-stand. There's a release that folds the wand over so it can lean and charge on its cable, and that fold-over is also how it tucks under furniture. It's not a dealbreaker — it's just a habit you learn on day one. If a freestanding dock matters to you, that's the Clean & Empty version, not this one.

- Cut the weight on thick carpet — it's the one spot where the push-pull effort shows.
- A freestanding option without needing the full dock model would be nice.
- Runtime honesty — I'd love the box number to reflect auto mode, not just ECO.
