Shark PowerDetect ThermaCharged AV2900XE Vacuum & Mop Review

Dad Approved Shark ThermaCharged Robot Vacuum AV2900XE (White)_1200x1200_1
IS THE SHARK POWERDETECT THERMACHARGED AV2900XE WORTH IT?

Why Dad Likes It

  • Heated mop wash and hot-air dry — hygienic, no musty pad
  • Spinning LiDAR — navigates well
  • Hands-free dock empties, refills water, washes & dries the pad
  • Avoids clutter well; can leave the mop pad at the base for vacuum-only

What To Know

  • Shark app is basic — few settings to fine-tune for your home
  • Dock is hard to clean (no tray removal); single roller; small dustbin clogs
  • No suction while the mop is lifted over carpet
Bottom Line icon

BOTTOM LINE: Is the Shark PowerDetect ThermaCharged AV2900XE Just a Dad Approved?

It IS Just A Dad Approved. The ThermaCharged is the heated version of Shark's PowerDetect NeverTouch Pro, and the heat is exactly what was missing. It washes the mop pad with hot water (185°F) and dries it with hot air, fixing the musty, cold-washed pad that dragged down the standard model. Everything else that was already good carries over: a well-built robot, spinning LiDAR that navigates well, strong clutter avoidance, and a hands-free dock that empties, refills water, and now washes and dries the pad with heat. The app is still basic and the dock is hard to clean, but the heated mop wash tips this one over the line.

🐾

HAIR & PET TEST

It carries the older Shark single brush roller, so hair handling is okay but not a strength.

💧

MOPPING TEST

Big upgrade: hot-water wash and hot-air dry mean no musty pad—though water output has only two settings.

⚠️

OBSTACLE / CLUTTER TEST

Spinning LiDAR navigates well, avoids clutter, and the robot almost always makes it back to the dock.

⚙️

MAINTENANCE REALITY

Heated dock keeps the pad hygienic, but the wash area lacks tray removal and the small dustbin clogs easily.

3 Months of Real Use in My Home

If you like the Shark ecosystem, these robots are really nicely built — they look good and feel well made. The ThermaCharged is the heated upgrade of the standard PowerDetect NeverTouch Pro: same well-built robot, same spinning LiDAR, but with one key change in the dock. It washes the mop pad with hot water and dries it with hot air. That single upgrade addresses the biggest complaint about the cold-water version, and it's enough to move the verdict from Skip It to Just A Dad Approved. It scored a 7.1 out of 10.

A model note up front: this is the white AV2900XE, sold on Amazon. The same robot is sold as the black RV2920XE (Best Buy and Amazon), and also appears as the RV2910XE at Target and as UK variants. Identical hardware — same scores, same verdict. Pick by color and current price.

What's in the Box and First Setup

The robot is attractive and the base station is relatively small. Setup runs through Shark's app, and the carpet verification run can be confusing. The app itself is still basic when you go to fine-tune the robot — more on that below — but the heated dock is the headline reason to consider this model over its cold-water sibling.

Cleaning Performance: What It Actually Picks Up

Mopping Performance

Mopping scored a 7.8. The ThermaCharged system washes the mop pad with 185°F water and dries it with 175°F air, which keeps the pad hygienic and prevents the musty, damp-pad problem that plagues cold-water robots. The robot still lays down a lot of water, and you still can't fine-tune how much — it's either a little or a lot — and it mops until the internal tank runs dry before returning to wash and refill. But the heated wash is a genuine, felt improvement.

As before, the mop pad detaches and can be left at the base so the robot can run vacuum-only passes.

Carpet

Carpet cleaning scored a 6.5. The carpet sensor works — when it detects carpet, NeverStuck Charged lifts the rear (Shark says up to 2x higher) to keep the mop off the carpet. But it lifts so high that there's no suction while lifted, so on carpet with the mop installed it's really just traveling across. Seeing the carpet zones in the app is a little confusing.

Pet Hair

Hair tangle scored a 6.5. The single brush roller is an older Shark design, so hair handling is okay but not a strength.

Obstacle Avoidance

Obstacle avoidance was the best category at an 8.0. The robot navigates rather well and rarely needs rescuing — it generally cleans and makes it back to the base on its own. It doesn't do the best job up against walls, where it blows air to push dust out of corners; that works okay, but a side brush that extends into the corner would do better, and this robot doesn't have one.

The Dock and Maintenance

The heated NeverTouch Pro dock is the star — it auto-empties, refills the water tank, and washes and dries the mop pad with heat. The one carryover problem: the area where it washes the flat mop pad is still hard to clean, and there's no tray removal, so you end up on your hands and knees getting into the crevices. The dustbin is also brought forward from older robots, so it's on the small side and the filter clogs a little easily.

The Shark App Experience

The app is still the weak point. It's limiting for fine-tuning the robot — you can't really tune water output (just less/more), you can't do multiple floors (so the robot and base have to live on the floor you're cleaning), and there aren't settings to adjust for different room sizes or floor materials. Fewer settings means less to mess up, but it also means you can't fully dial the robot in.

What I'd Change About the Shark PowerDetect ThermaCharged AV2900XE

  • Give the app real settings — water tuning, room sizes, multi-floor support.
  • Add tray removal so the heated mop-wash area is easy to clean.
  • Add a side brush that reaches into corners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Buyer Questions
Is the Shark PowerDetect ThermaCharged AV2900XE worth buying?+

Yes, for the right buyer — it's Just A Dad Approved. The heated mop wash (185°F water, hot-air dry) fixes the cold-water, musty-pad problem of the standard PowerDetect. It's a well-built, hands-free combo with spinning LiDAR. The remaining catches are a basic app and a dock that's hard to clean.

What's the difference between the AV2900XE and the RV2920XE?+

Color and SKU only. The AV2900XE is white (Amazon Exclusive); the RV2920XE is black (Best Buy and Amazon). They're the same robot — same scores, same verdict, same replacement parts. Pick by color and current price.

What's the difference between the ThermaCharged and the standard PowerDetect NeverTouch Pro?+

The dock. The ThermaCharged washes the mop pad with hot water (185°F) and dries it with hot air; the standard PowerDetect (AV2800ZE) uses cold water. They're otherwise the same robot — the heat is the upgrade, and it's why this one earns the nod while the cold-water version was a Skip It.

Why does the heated mop wash matter?+

Cold-washed mop pads sit damp in the base and can get musty and bacteria-laden. Washing at 185°F and drying with hot air keeps the pad hygienic and odor-free, and it means cleaner water going back onto your floors.

Does it vacuum carpet well with the mop on?+

Not really. The carpet sensor lifts the rear over carpet (up to 2x higher), but it lifts so high there's no suction while lifted — so with the mop installed it mostly just travels across carpet. You can leave the mop pad at the base for vacuum-only runs.

Is the dock easy to maintain?+

The heat keeps the pad hygienic, but the wash area is still hard to clean and there's no tray removal, so cleaning it means getting into the crevices by hand. The dustbin is also small and clogs a little easily.
