3 Months of Real Use in My Home

After three to four months of daily use across hardwood, tile, and carpet, the Shark PowerDetect upright review comes down to one line: it earned the Just A Dad sticker and it's my current #1 corded recommendation. The reasons are simple — it has amazing suction that stays easy to push, it figures out the floor and the dirt for you, and it doesn't wrap hair around the roller.

What's in the Box and First Setup

In the box you get the vacuum, a Crevice Tool, a Duster, and the Pet Hair Tool. There's a little assembly, but nothing that needs a manual. The cord is a big deal on day one: it's almost 29 feet long, so you can do a whole room — and usually a whole floor — without hunting for a new outlet.

Hard Floor and Tile Performance

On hardwood and tile the PowerDetect is easy to like. FloorDetect senses the hard floor and eases the roller down so it isn't kicking debris across the room, then speeds it back up when you roll onto carpet. I could get right up under the cabinets and it stayed light and controlled.

Carpet and Pet Hair

The carpet is where it works hardest — and where it shines. Roll onto carpet and you can feel it sense the surface and ramp the suction up. It pulled up dog hair, cereal, and big chunks off thick carpet without bogging down, and the self-cleaning roller kept the brush clear the whole test window — no cutting hair off with scissors. The surprising part is how light it stays to push while it's cleaning that hard; there's no vent flap to crack open for easier movement, it just moves easily on its own.

The Big-Mess Test

I dropped a big mixed mess on thick carpet and ran it in auto Detect mode. The DirtDetect indicator glowed to show it was working, the suction ramped up on the dirty spots, and I could clean at normal walking speed instead of crawling along. Even with the dust bin nearly full, the suction didn't fall off.

The Detect Sensors

• DirtDetect — senses hidden dirt and ramps suction up automatically. The indicator lets you know when the floor's still dirty; when it reads clean, it eases the suction back down so you know when to stop.
• FloorDetect — senses carpet vs. hard floor and changes the roller speed for you, so you're not stopping to push buttons.

There's also a touchscreen up top if you'd rather pick a mode yourself — Detect (auto), Hard Floor, Carpet, or Thick Carpet — plus a built-in light and a Lift-Away handle.

Suction & the Dust Bin

This is the part I keep bragging about: the suction is strong but the vacuum never gets hard to move, and the big dust bin doesn't choke it. The filter sits up out of the dirt's path, so as the bin fills the suction just keeps going. When it's time to empty, you press the release, carry the bin to the trash, and hit the button — the whole chamber dumps out clean.

Maintenance Reality

Emptying is genuinely easy — press the button and the bin drops open over the trash. There's a HEPA filter and a foam/felt filter set you rinse and reuse every so often. The one recurring chore is the Detect sensors: they need a quick wipe now and then, and if the DirtDetect indicator stays lit, that's your cue to clean them. The roller is self-cleaning, so long hair strips off instead of wrapping.

Lift-Away & Reach

Pop the handle off and the canister comes with you as a Lift-Away unit — handy for stairs, upholstery, and the car. Paired with that near-29-foot cord, you can cover a lot of ground before you unplug. The trade-off is weight: it's a full-size upright, so it's a little heavy to carry up a staircase.

What I'd Change About the Shark PowerDetect Upright Vacuum

• Cut a little weight — it's the one spot you feel it, hauling it up stairs.
• A lighter Lift-Away canister would make the stairs a non-issue.
• Make the detect sensors easier to wipe — a tool-free access flap would be nice.

Shark PowerDetect Upright Vacuum vs Dyson Ball Animal 3

The Dyson Ball Animal 3 is the upright I'd put closest to it on cleaning — it picks up about as well. But the Dysons are heavier and a little awkward to steer, and the Shark is none of that: it cleans just as well while staying easy to push. If maneuverability matters to you, that's the Shark's edge.
