Take the Quiz

Dad’s short answer: Spot cleaner if your problem is accidents — pet messes, spills, one stain at a time. Upright if your problem is whole rooms of dingy carpet. Most people who think they need an upright actually need a spot cleaner, and it costs a fraction as much.

What each one is genuinely for

A portable spot cleaner is a small tank, a short hose and a hand tool. You carry it to the mess, spray, scrub with the tool, and suck it back up. It deals with one spot at a time and it's ready in about thirty seconds.

An upright carpet cleaner is a full machine you push across a whole room, laying down solution and extracting it as you go. It's the machine for deep-cleaning wall-to-wall carpet — the kind of job you'd otherwise rent a machine or hire somebody for.

They're not really competitors. One is for accidents, the other is for a twice-a-year deep clean.

How to pick

Be honest about what actually happens in your house. If the answer is "the dog has accidents" or "the kids spill things," that's a spot cleaner, every time. You want something you can grab immediately, because on a fresh stain the speed matters far more than the power.

If the answer is "my carpet is generally dull and I want it to look new again," that's an upright.

If it's both, and you have a lot of carpet with pets, get both — or get an upright that has a built-in hose and spot tool, which is a real category now and covers most of the middle ground. That combination is what I'd point most pet-and-carpet households toward.

What I'd avoid is buying a big upright for a problem that's really about pet accidents. It'll sit in the closet because dragging it out for one spot isn't worth it, and you'll clean the stain with a rag instead.

Dad’s Take: Most people asking about an upright actually need a spot cleaner. The one you'll grab in thirty seconds is the one that gets used.
